Description

A Second World War Royal Air Force camp is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on Main Street opposite Lenborough Woods and centred at SP 66289 31381, Site No.1 is an accommodation camp for nearby RAF Finmere, comprising a sentry post, sergeants’ and airmens’ latrines and ablution blocks, officers’ quarters, sergeants’ quarters and airmens’ barracks, accessed by a network of pathways. Eight earth-covered air raid shelters are distributed across the camp. The camp is contained within a fence and a barbed wire entanglement. Between 1947 and 1961, all of the camp buildings but one have been demolished, though the concrete hut platforms remain visible. The air raid shelters also remain extant. The final surviving building has been demolished by 1973. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the earth-covered air raid shelters appear to remain intact, as do some of the concrete building platforms (1-7).
