Description
A 600 yard 'militia and volunteer rifle range' is marked on the 1st edition 25-inch and 6-inch OS maps in the grounds of Wycombe Abbey. Firing points are shown at 50 yard intervals between 100 and 600 yards. The target butt was to the SE, dug into the slope at the east end of Warren Wood. Not shown on the 1898 2nd edition 25-inch and 1900 6-inch OS maps, or on later OS maps, so presumably the rifle range was no longer in use by the end of the 19th century. The earthworks of the target butt and a nearby earth mound, presumably used to shelter the target changer during firing, survive and are visible on LiDAR. NGRs to target butt and the 600 yard marker (B14).
