Description
SP 933142 The foundations of a Roman building, a well and ovens in an area enclosed by ditches were revealed by the stripping of topsoil preparatory to quarrying. Small excavations by the Manshead Arch. Soc. (who also planned the site) and by the Pitstone Local History Soc. (B1); MORE INFO ON SOCIETIES' WORK - SEE CAS CARD (B5). The site consisted of a ditched enclosure with the remnants of a substantial building largely ploughed out. A short length of wall survived with painted plaster and roof tile and the flint base to a timber frame. Much pottery, including Belgic wares, small objects, and coins were found. This was a farmstead starting life in pre-Roman times and going through. (B4). NGR AGREED BY SOCIETIES (B4).
