Description
The gas works was constructed north of the Mansion in 1856 (B19).
Gasometer present on the 1880 to 1925 OS maps indicating a private gasworks to Mentmore house, which was built in 1852-4 for Baron Mayer de Rothschild. Like other members of the Rothchild Family he installed a gasworks to light his house. The gasworks buildings survive as residential or potentially office buildings. Record of the gasworks also survive (B20).
During World War II the National Portrait Gallery collections were stored in purpose-built racking with heating installed in the battery house and gas house at Mentmore estate gas works from August 1939 to May 1945. Part of the collection was moved out in 1942. [Photos] (B26).
