APPROX 9 ?HOUSE PLATFORMS (& A NO OF HOLLOW WAYS) FOUND IN FIELDWALKING; VISIBLE ON APS. SITE IS 900 M NW OF GT HORWOOD CHURCH, NGR TO CENTRE (SKETCH ON CAS CARD)(B1).
SMALL GROUP OF BUILDINGS SHOWN HERE ON 1825 MAP (B3).

An area of deserted settlement of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located at The Common, Great Horwood, and centred at SP 77625 31897. These earthworks are just inside the boundary of the former Whaddon Chase which still exists as the southern boundary to this area. On the 1813 map there is a single building and a pond shown in the area. The features visible are mounds and ditches, a mound exists on the site of the building shown on the 1813 map. A sub circular ditch of 28m in diameter is visible close to parallel linear ditches (possible remnants of ridge and furrow or orchard ridges, a possible trackway visible as parallel curving ditches could be a short length of a trackway through the settlement with other linear features forming plot boundaries. Modern land use appears to be pasture/grazing for horses, some gardens and modern boundary features, as well as an area of rough ground, which may confuse some of the features on the lidar visualisation.
