Find Spot record 0129400000 - DORNEY WOOD, BURNHAM

A number of flint tools, some being delicate bifaces of the most advanced Acheulian type were recovered from brickearth on the Dorneywood (Burnham Beeches) Golf Course (SU 93 84), some 60 years ago (c 1900). Five specimens form part of the Shrubsole collection in the Reading Borough Museum; a larger group comprised of objects other than bifaces is in the County Museum, Aylesbury (B1).
FLINTS FROM BRICKEARTH FROM WORKINGS AT NGR OR CASUAL WORKINGS ON GOLF COURSE (B3,B5).
Palaeoliths found by Treacher associated with decayed mammalian bones. Find spot on S edge of Glacial Gravel (of Winter Hill or higher terraces), and Brickearth recorded by Treacher and White. In 1995-6 a deep tree-covered pit survived beside the road opposite the gates to Kiln Wood, but other pits previously existed on Dorney Wood Golf Course. Site assessed as a Lower Palaeolith find spot of particular importance (B6-7).



Dorney Wood. SU 938848. Finds comprise 17 handaxes and 3 unretouched flakes. Distribution: Aylesbury, Oxford University and Reading Museums.
(SU 9484) Seven Pa handaxes and a worked fragment from Burnham Golf Links are now in Oxford Universtiy museum (B8).
Three handaxes and a flake worked to resemble a handaxe are in the Treacher Coll'n (Oxford University Mus). They were found near the surface when the Golf Links were made. It is also noted that 'a number were taken away by some unknown person'. The Golf Links lie on the Boyn Hill terrace c SU 938840. (Acc Nos 1037-1040) (B3)
Bucks Co Museum confirm the finds of 17 handaxes and 3 unretouched flakes (Auth 2). Eleven axes are held by Bucks Co Museum, Acc Nos 182.09, 548.05 (found SU 933 847). Three flakes; Acc Nos 569.05 & 182.09. Reading Museum hold the remaining 6 handaxes, Acc Nos -
Equation not keyed. (found SU 933 847).
All the above were found between 1895 & 1909. Bucks Co Museum also list the following Pa handaxes held by Oxford University Museum and found on "The golf link, Burnham Beeches" - Nos 1264, 1291, 1335 1383, 1037-1040 in D Roe's Burnham Beeches list of material in the Treacher Collection (B2).
