Description

BOUNDARY DYKE IV IS A GOOD BANK, AS DESCRIBED IN B1; HOWEVER, DOES NOT APPEAR TO EXIST N OF 'FLINT MINES' (B2). (FOR 'FLINT MINES' SEE B1). Detailed topographic survey carried out by TimeScape and Network Archaeology between January and March 1999 recorded surviving earthworks including a profile across earthwork (B9).
Survey of earthwork with GPS system. Ditch and bank of Upper 'Grim's Ditch' on Pitstone Hill. Continues into woodland of Aldbury Nowers to S. Earthworks distinct but lower and more rounded than in woodland to S. 10m span, amplitude 0.5m, 0.75m in places. At N end ditch turns abruptly to E, to fornm a pit-like terminal, although this could also be a later alteration. No indication that earthworks once continued further to N (B10).
