Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Archaeological Solutions in July and August 2012 in advance of proposed redevelopment identified a late medieval ditch, 2 post-medieval pits and 1 ditch, 2 modern pits and a modern brick outbuilding wall. The medieval ditch, interpreted as a property boundary was aligned NNW-SSE and was at least 10m long and 1.6m wide with steep sides and a flat base 0.6m deep; finds of 15th century pottery, animal bone including cattle horn cores, charred cereal grains and post-medieval brick and tile were recovered from the fill. The relatively high numbers of horn cores suggest specialised craft or industrial activity in the vicinity. The post-medieval ditch was 0.96m wide, aligned ENE-WSW with steep sides and shallow flat base only 0.13m deep and the fill included an iron fragment and post-medieval brick and tile. Of the two post-medieval pits, one was rectangular, 0.84m long and 0.22m wide with steep sides and a shallow flat base, 0.19m deep, containing brick and tile fragments; the other was irregular, 1.8m long and 1.2m wide with gently sloping sides and shallow, uneven base 0.13m deep, and contained 17th-18th century pottery, brick and tile and an iron fragment. See report for detail (B4).
Negative watching brief carried out by Archaeological Solutions in April and August 2015 during groundworks for foundations of replacement building (B5).
