Description

Decoy 'bunker' recorded as visible on APs at SP8689 1724 (B2).
The shelter layout is clearly visible in 2006 APs.

A Second World War bombing decoy shelter is visible on historic aerial photograph and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in the corner of a field about 615 metres SW of Thistlebrook Farm and centred at SP 86875 17241, the bombing decoy’s control building was also known as a night shelter. It is a type known as a Drem Q 367/41, after its Air Ministry Drawing number. The 9 metres long and up to 3 metres wide structure is likely set on a concrete base and constructed from a mix of brick, pre-cast and site-cast concrete and corrugated iron. The building is surface built and then covered with a layer of earth that offers both camouflage and some bomb blasts protection. It has two entrances, one at the end and then one to the side. Each entrance is protected by a 3 metres long blast wall placed perpendicular to it. The control room was manned by two RAF servicemen. Within the control (operating) room is a heating stove, telephone and a control panel. A short passage then leads to a generator room, containing two generators that exhaust into three expansion chambers to muffle their noise. On the exterior were two 15-inch air inlet ducts for the generators. On the roof of the shelter building,
above the operating room, was a head-lamp platform accessed externally. Between 1950 and 1961, the earth covering was removed or eroded from the building. On aerial photographs taken in 2023, the building remains visible (3-7).
