Description
Cookham Bridge built in 1839 by the Cookham Bridge Company, replacing an earlier ferry. The timber bridge was 88m long and 4.9m wide and constructed by Mr Freebody to designs by George Treacher, for a cost of £4,224 and opened on 1st January 1840. In 1866-7 a new iron bridge was built by Pease, Hutchinson & Co Ltd of Darlington for an estimated cost of £2,520. The older bridge was demolished on 6th May 1867 and the new bridge opened on 1st July 1867, operating as a toll bridge until 1947 when the tolls were abolished by Berkshire County Council (B2-3).
Cookham Bridge features in Stanley Spencer's paintings 'Swan Upping at Cookham' of 1915-9, and 'Turk's Boatyard Cookham' of about 1931.
