Description

The hut is infact a stone-clad lean-to building attached to the exterior of the early 18th Century ha ha wall at Stowe. The date for its construction is uncertain but the coursed brickwork incorporated into the internal faces of the east and south walls suggest it may date to the second half of the 19th century. (66)

The interior of the hut has a brick floor laid face down. Removal of mud and silt from the floor led to the discovery of an oval-shaped brick-lined pit (0.80m x 0.45m x 0.90m deep) set into the floor close to the angle of the south and west walls of the hut. The sides of the pit correspond with the edges of a low-sprung brick arch into the base of the south wall and exiting to the exterior. (66)
