Description

Probable eighteenth or nineteenth century missing milepost on A41 in Aston Clinton not marked on current OS mapping but marked on 1825 Bryant map, 1st edition 25-inch OS map and on 1835 1-inch OS map. On Aylesbury to Tring (H1) route. Inscription: Lon 36 Ayles 2. 1820 Erectionof MPs (Sparrows Herne Trust) Nos, 33, 35, 36, 37 still visible. 1966 Extract "Bucks Life", Nov.- Bucks Milestones R.I.E. Haynes, MPs. Ayl. /Bicester, 1883. Milestones on ground marked with distance to London on top, parish middle, Aylesbury to left from road. (B1).
According to Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamsbire 1706-1881 wtith their connections into neighbouring counties 2017. This was on on The Sparrows Herne Turnpike Road 1762 road 12 p.163. One of three important routes from London to West Midlands this road ran through Aylesbury and Banbury. Trade gew on this popular route in the the 1830s. The northern end of the road was at a junction of the Wendover Road in Walton south of Aylesbury in 1826 the High Street was built which extended the Trust's responsibilty to the Market Square in Aylesbury. The southern limit was south east of Watford. The road was 25 1/2 miles long, with 5 1/2 miles in Bucks. Mileposts were erected in heart of oak in 1764 12 inches square 5ft 6 inches hight unusal for Bucks in 1826 R Barrett replaced the wooden posts with cast iron mileposts modelled on those on the Bath Road. Standardised metal posts with two white faces and mileages in black paint. According to historical sources there were 230 milemarkers in Bucks; there are records of 116 surviving Sparrows Herne was a road in Bushey that still exists. During WW2 through out county milemrkers were removed for security or buried somrtmes not bck in right place." survive at 31 and 37 to London in Tring and Aylesbury.metal sts [Copy in HER] (B2).
