Description
Geophysical survey carried out by Bartlett-Clark Consultancy in October-November 2010 identified possible rectilinear ditches, defined by relatively weak magnetic anomalies and apparently with a similar alignment to the ridge and furrow. Interpreted as possible field boundary ditches (B1).
Late Iron Age-Roman pits and ditches were found to the north of Area B during trial trench evaluation comprising a dense cluster of pits and ditches, including re-deposited remains (c40%) of a human burial recovered from a pit. The nature of activity in this area is unclear, but likely indicates a settlement within the vicinity. A second area of Roman activity was present in the south of Area B. The features found and the paucity of finds are indicative of field systems or other agricultural enclosure(B2).
