Description
Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone present in 2003 on updated Milestones Society website on Thame to Risborough route National ID number BU_THR105. ' On well kept grass verge' on Thame Road Longwick village on south side A4129. Opposite White Gables. 33cm wide X 20cm deep X 67cm high. Inscription: centre: Risborough/ 1 1/4 / Wycombe/ 10.' Stone rather crumbly repainted well in gothic script 2003 '. [ Detailed description, location and photograh ] (B1).
Confirmed by handwritten notes on maps were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies.Under title 'J5 Milestones on Ground'. NGR: 789 049 Parish: Longwick: Number on 1" OS 1835: No number. Information: Poor state: stone milestone: Front facing only: No original marks: painted on figure Wycome 10. According to Peter Gulland in The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring counties 2017. This is on The Princes Risborough and Thame Turnpike Road 1795 road 19 p.241. This Trust had 3 branches from Terrick to Worlds End Wendover from Princes Risborogh to Thame now A4129 this milestone is on this branch. The other branch is from West Wycome Road to Cressex Road.They were primitive milestones for Bucks rectangular stones 11 and half by 10 and half inches with front face with whtes face sqare to road painted white black insciption. One of 116 modern records of milemarkers in the county according to PG out a possible 230 from historical souces. During World War 2 milestones were moved for security reasons through out country sometimes not replaced or put back in wrong place. [Copy in HER] (B3)
