Description

Complex of adjoining large curvilinear and rectilinear ditched enclosures of late Iron Age to early Roman date identified during investigations by Stratascan and Albion Archaeology from September to December 2009. The banjo enclosure was at the south-western part of the enclosure complex, measured about 70m X 80m with a shallow, concave ditch, 1.4m wide and 0.46m deep and had no traces of internal features. Other enclosures in the complex were also found to have wide and shallow boundary ditches, some apparently recut, and contained narow dividing ditches, shallow pits, a few possible postholes and a ditched trackway or droveway aligned NE-SW and apparently heading towards the field system at AZ4. Many features had been deliberately back-filled with deposits including animal bone, possible kiln or oven furniture fragments, late Iron Age and early Roman pottery. Iinterpreted as an area used primarliy for livestock. Complex recorded as AZ3. See reports for detail (B1-2).
