Description

Complex of adjoining rectilinear and curvilinear ditched enclosures of late Iron Age to early Roman date identified during investigations by Stratascan and Albion Archaeology from September to December 2009. A probable late Iron Age banjo enclosure with few signs of internal features is interpreted as a possible occupation site on the basis of the dark, organic backfilled deposits within the ditch fills. The other enclosures contained subdividing ditches, pits and postholes and a ditched trackway or droveway apparently leading off to the NE. Most features had been deliberately back-filled with deposits including animal bone, fired clay and pottery, suggesting it went out of use in the late Iron Age or early Roman period. The enclosures are interpreted as in use for livestock. Complex recorded as AZ3. See report for detail (B2).
