Description

2 adjoining large rectilinear ditched enclosures of early Roman date identified during investigations by Stratascan and Albion Archaeology from September to December 2009. The northernmost enclosure was trapezoidal in shape, containing a dense cluster of ditches, intercutting gullies, pits, postholes, a cobbled surface and possible trackway, suggesting subdivision into activity areas and is interpreted as a settlement enclosure. All features had been deliberately back-filled with deposits including animal bone, fired clay, early Roman pottery and cess or dung deposits in the main enclosure ditch which was up to 3.4m wide and survived to a depth of 0.67m. The smaller southernmost enclosure was rectilinear, with some evidence of sub-division but few internal pits and ditches and few finds and is interpreted as an ancillary area used for livestock. Complex recorded as AZ2. See reports for detail (B4-5).
