Summary

Saxon cemetery found whilst digging a bunker. Three Saxon inhumations found on the golf course at Ellesborough in 1908. One was accompanied by a double-sided comb, firesteel, and a panther cowrie shell.

Description

3 INHUMATIONS DISCOVERED ON GOLF COURSE DURING DIGGING OF BUNKER 30' x 8'. SITE C.230M N OF CASS 00930. 1ST BODY, CROUCHED BURIAL, MALE C.60. GRAVE 45-51CM DEEP. 2ND BODY MALE PROB 40-45, EXTENDED BURIAL. GRAVE 51CM DEEP. 3RD BODY FAIRLY TALL MALE UNDER 25. GRAVE 80CM DEEP (B1).



Three Anglo-Saxon inhumations were discovered on the golf course at Ellesborough in 1908, during an excavation measuring 30 ft long N-S and 8 ft wide for a new bunker. The spot is perhaps 250 yds north of the storage pit site (See SP 80 NW 11)(B1) at SP 845070(B3)
Discovered with the interments was an iron knife, a small iron buckle, a small piece of iron which may have been a part of a knife with a rounded end, a double sided comb, a think piece of iron with turned back ends and the shell of a Panther Cowry(B1) The finds and two skulls are in the Bucks Co Museum(B3).
