Description

AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL WATCHING BRIEF CARRIED OUT DURING MODIFICATIONS TO CHURCH DRAINS N OF CHURCH DID NOT REVEAL ANY BURIALS. NO OTHER SIGNIFICANT ARCHAEOLOGICAL FEATURES OR DEPOSITS WERE ENCOUNTERED (SEE REPORT)(B11).
In April 1999 OAU undertook a watching brief during the excavation of a drain and soakaway leading south west away from the wall of the South Aisle. Disarticulated human remains were found in the excavations for the drain runs and soakaway. The drain runs revealed former tarmaced surfaces, and the soakway burial soil contained fragmented red house brick, Victorian bottle glass and fragments of Victorian floor and roof tiles. The disturbed soil layers are thought to have originated during major restoration works in 1871 and during the installation of an early 20th century water main (B13).
