Description

GRAVEL PIT, E OF MANSION LANE, SHREDDING GREEN. WORKED BETWEEN 1926 & 1936, & OBSERVED BY A D LACAILLE DURING THIS TIME. FINDS OF SEVERAL DATES FOUND, LOWER PALEOLITHIC (01:000) NEO/BRONZE AGE SITE (02:000) AND SAXON/VIKING (10:000). PHOTO OF PIT AT GEOLOGICAL RECORD CENTRE (B1-8).
Palaeolithic finds from Lavender's Pit held by British Museum are all listed under the Lacaille Collection (Acc Nos 1938 11-6 and 1-67). One Palaeolithic handaxe found 1939, is held by Bucks County Museum (Acc No 54-65) and 4 Clactonian flints (Lacaille Collection) are held by the Pitts River Museum - Acc Nos 1941 6.3 (B8).
PIT AT NGR (B9).

Seven small artificial hollows were exposed in Lavender's Gravel Pit (sited from plan at TQ 02418025) in March 1936. Neolithic 'B' pottery (identified by Piggott), flint implements and charcoal were found. The pit had previously produced Palaeolithic implements (B4).
Now disused and overgrown and no finds were made (B13).
Palaeolithic material from Lavender's Pit comprised:- at least 55 handaxes and 3 roughouts, 11 retouched and 67 unretouched flakes, 5 worked fragments, 2 Levallois cores and 8 flakes. Mostly in the British Museum, but some in Aylesbury Museum (B14).
The Neolithic sherds and flint implements (Authority 1) are also held by the British Museum (B15).
Lavender's Pit is being reclaimed by waste dumping (B16).
