'Gasometer' shown on 1st edition 25-inch OS map at NGR; shown on 1900 2nd edition edition 6-inch map as 'Gasometers', so presumably gasworks had been expanded. Ancillary buildings (but not the gasometers) shown on subsequent OS maps until the 1960s (B10).
Notice of auction published in The Times of 4th July 1894 mentions 'gas houses and two retorts' (B7).
Lilies house built 1870 for Vernon Brittain. The Ordnance Survey of 1878-80 shows a single, very small 'gasometer ‘about 70 yards north of the house but hidden from it by a mixed plantation. The gas plant was made by James Copcutt [gas engineer of Aylesbury]. Nothing visible survives (B14).
