Description

Watching brief carried out by AS&C in April and May 2010 during service trenching within churchyard recorded 45 individual human burials as well as significant quantities of disarticulated remains. The human remains and associated coffin fittings were reburied within the churchyard. Unstratified finds of Roman pottery were also recovered. The foundations of an externally-butressed wall made of hand-made bricks in a lime mortar were found 15m to the east of the existing churchyard boundary, on the line of an earlier church boundary shown on late 19th century first edition OS maps, suggesting that the churchyard has been extended to the west in the late 19th century. See report for details (B16).
The current western boundary of the churchyard is shown on second edition OS maps of 1900.
