Description

1 OF 5 SITES EXCAVATED DURING BUILDING OF CHALFONT ST PETER BYPASS. MESOLITHIC WORKING FLOOR WITH WASTE FLAKES & OTHER FLINTS. ALSO PREHISTORIC, ROMAN & MEDIEVAL POTTERY. EXCAVATION DONE IN 26 METRE SQUARES. AVAILABLE AREA LIMITED DUE TO ROAD CONSTRUCTION (FULL PUBLISHED REPORT)(B1-2).
MATERIAL GIVEN TO BCM & SORTED (B4).
Incorrectly described as a neolithic settlement (B6).

Excavations by L H Barfield, during December 1966 -January 1967 in advance of a new road, produced finds including "large quantities of flakes and flint nodule fragments, broken and rough-out tranchet axes, a few blade artifacts and small potsherds". The finds are retained by Barfield and will be presented to Buckinghamshire County Museum when the excavation report is completed. In Records of Buckinghamshire (1) the site is described as a Neolithic settlement, but correspondence from Barfield in Buckinghamshire County Museum Card Index (2) state that it is a Mesolithic flint-knapping site overlaid by a layer containing probable late Bronze Age pottery, then Romano-British and "prehistoric pottery", and finally medieval and modern material. The excavation site plan (circa 5" to 1 mile) indicates the site at TQ 01158840 (B1 and B7).
The site (at TQ 011 884) contained material from a Mesolithic flint industry including 1859 waste flakes and blades, 1203 shattered fragments and 27 cores; only 2.1% of the finds were finished artefacts. There were forty five later prehistoric pottery sherds, suggesting a date not earlier than the end of the Bronze Age or later than the start of the Roman period. Ten Roman sherds are believed to suggest activity in this area before the end of the 3rd century AD. There were also Medieval sherds. Full report (B8).
