Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone on A4010 in Stoke Mandeville village outside 16 Station Road. On Milestones Society website as present in 2002 on Wycombe to Aylesbury route National ID number BU_WYAY14. 35cm wide 22cm deep 79cm high on east side of road.' On domestic grass verge'. Arrow heads for direction of travel. Inscription in black paint : front : AYLESBURY { } 2 3/4 2 1/2 { } : WYCOMBE 14 { } . Not recorded on current OS map but present on 1st edition 1:2500 inch. According to Peter Gullands study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their onnections into neighbouring counties 2017 this is on The Princes Risborough and Thame Turnpike Road 1795 p.241. This road Station Road is now A4010 and the turnpike went southwards from West Wycome then straight through Risborough along the High Street. This dead straight road was part of enclosure 1797 this was taken over by the trust in 1822. These are the most primitive milestones in Buckinghamshire simple rectangles of stone roughly shaped no two the same town names in white and mileages in black on one face parallel to road. One or two have been repainted recently. 9 out of 13 survive on the Risborough road branch 5 out of 7 on the Thame branch. During WW2 milemarkers were removed throughout the country sometimes put back wrongly or not at all. This is one of a 116 records out of a possible 230 milemarkers from historic records.After thetrusts closed in 18800s and 18900s Vbucks replace mising milemarkers on aome rads with standsrdised metal psts wiyh 2 white faces with black paaint that the Milestones Society calls Bucks Pressings.
