Description

Eighteenth or nineteenth century milestone on A4010 in Little Kimble outside Hatch Furlong. Recorded as present in 2002, on Wycombe to Aylesbury route National ID number BU_WYAY11. On west side of road, 23cm wide, 19cm deep, 58cm high . Bare stone, a little too far south, close to a domestic garden at GPS 8232 0699. No inscription recorded in 2002. Shown on 1835 1-inch OS map (sheet XXXIII ). Inscription : Wycombe 12 London 45. S of Little Kimble, on Princes Risborough, Kimble to Nash route. Also shown on 1st edition 25-inch OS map at SP8235 0672 on west side of road, but not on current OS map (B2).
According to Peter Gullands extensive study of the The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 2017
with their connections into neighbouring counties p241.This milestone is on The Princes Risborough and Thame Turnpike Road 1795 road 19. One of 116 modern records out of 230 possible historical milemarkers surviving in Bucks.These milestones were the most primitive of all the trusts simple rectangles of stone ten and a half inches by eleven and a half inches in cross section set square to the road. No painting was the same town names in white mileage in black 9 out of 13 milestones have survived on the Risborough Road and 5 out of seven milestones on the Thame branch. During WW2 some milemarkers throughout the country were removed or buried for security reasons and sometimes not returned or put back in wrong place. After the trusts closed in 1880s and 1890s on some roads with missing milemarkers Bucks highway authorities used standardised metal posts two white faces with black paint that the Milestones Society calls Bucks pressings.
