Description

Probable eighteenth or nineteenth century cast iron milepost on A41 in Kingswood by carpark of Crooked Billet PH now Akeman. Recorded on Milestones Society website as present in 2002 on Aylesbury to Bicester route National ID number BU_LCB47. 54cm wide 37cm deep 120 cm high on north side of road.' Painted around 1997'. Inscription: top: LONDON 47 : left: TO AYLESBURY 9 MILES : front: WOODHAM IN WADDESDON : right: TO BICESTER 7 MILES. Further inscription top back: LONDON RI & II. Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) and OSD 1'' map (1835) were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 27 sheet XXVII page 2 of notes. On on Waddesdon to Kingswood route (H2 + J3). Inscription: London 47 Bicester 7. In same notes under " H3 Milestones on Ground." On Bryant 1825 and OS 1" 1835. Number on 1" OS 46. Sketch of Milepost at NGR 646 199 SMR 1361100000. In same notes under Milestones and H in red box. 1820 Erection of MPs (Sparrows Herne Trust) Nos, 33,35,36,37 still visible.G-Blue Folder 4. 1966 Extract "Bucks Life", Nov. - Bucks Milestone, R.I.E.Haynes, MPS.
