Description

Probable eighteenth or nineteenth century cast iron milepost on A41 in Waddesdon village. Recorded as present in 2002 on Milestones Society website on Aylesbury to Bicester route National ID number BU_LCB44.' On grass verge by 130 High Street. painted around 1997 '. On north side of road 54cm wide 32cm deep 78cm high. Inscription: top: LONDON 44 : left: TO AYLESBURY 6 MILES : front: WADDESDON PARISH : right: TO BICESTER 10 MILES. Further inscription back top: LONDON RI & II. [ Detailed description, location and photograph available ] (B1).
Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OS Draft surveyors drawings (1814) and OS 1-inch map (1835) now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 27 sheet XXVII page 2 of notes. On Waddesdon to Kingswood (H2 +J3) route. Inscription: London 44 Bicester 10. In same notes under "H2 Milestones on Ground". On Bryant (1825) and OS 1" (1835). Number on 1" OS 43. Drawing and description of milepost at Ludgershall on same road. NGR 646 199 HER number 1361100000. In same notes under H in red box. Milestones. 1820 Erection of MPs (Sparrows Herne Trust). Small painted stone road marker showing distances to Bicester, Aylesbury and London. Lower part is a triangular prism. Upper part is semi-circular and contains the word LONDON and 44. Has been identified as being of local note because is a relatively rare survival of historic street sign within the district and makes a positive visual contribution to the appearance of the street. There is another similar road marker 1 mile away at the other end of the village, outside the Conservation Area. A Structure/Building of Note within the Conservation Area (B3).
