Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century cast iron milepost on A41 just east of Waddesdon village. Recorded as present in 2002 on Milestones Society website on Aylesbury to Bicester route National ID number BU_LCB43. On north side of road. 54cm wide, 35cm deep, 114cm high. 'On grass verge painted around 1997'. Inscription: top: LONDON 43: left: TO AYLESBURY 5 MILES: front: WADDESDON PARISH: right: TO BICESTER 11 MILES. Further inscription on back top LONDON RI & II. Confirmed by handwritten notes OS 1-inch map (1835) now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 28 sheet XXVIII page 4 of notes now . Inscription: London 43 Bicester 11. On Aylesbury to Waddesdon (H2) route. On current OS as milestone. In same notes under "H2 Milestones on Ground" Number on 1" OS 42. On Bryant (1825) and OS 1" (1835). Drawing and description of milepost in Ludgershall on same road. NGR 646 199 HER number 1361100000. In same notes under H in red box. Milestones. 1820 Erection of MPs ( Sparrows Herne Trust ) Nos. 33, 35, 36, 37 still visible. G. -Blue Folder 4. 1966 Extract " Bucks Life " Nov.- Bucks Milestones, R.I.E. Haynes, MPs.
