Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone recorded on Milestones Society website in 2010 as present in 2002 on Buckingham to Banbury route A421 National ID number BU_LC59. In Tingewick Road on grass bank. 36cm wide 25cm deep 97cm high on north side of road. 'Benchmark middle of right side, chunk out of back. Must have been reset around 1999 when road improved'. Inscription: front face: LONDON 59 BUCKINGHAM 2 BANBURY 16. [ Detailed description, location and photograph available ] (B1).
Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) and 1" OS map (1835) were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 13 sheet XII on page 1 of notes. Inscription: London 59. On Buckingham towards Bicester (L1) route. Also recorded in same notes under L1 Buckingham-Aynho Turnpike, " fair with benchmark ". March 1989 Bucks CC Engineers Dept. Inscription as above. Also under Milestones - Types Buckingham to Banbury - L1 (A421). ' Stone. Flat face parallel to road. Letters engraved, now painted.' Note O.S. maps will show present positions- may not coincide with historical positions. Recorded as defaced on 'All Historic Layers' database. Also under " L. Milestones on Ground. (A421)." NGR 668 333 : Parish: Buckingham: No number on 1" OS 1835 recorded. : London 59 Buck-ham 2 Banbury 16 ( Illustration below ). Illustration annotated Stone milestone painted letters. In same notes under L in red box. Milestones. 1744 17 Geo. II. Road to be measured and stones or posts to be erected. G4.2 underlined in red. Attached to L1 and C7 BCC Engineers Dept. ( Maintainance Division ) Mr Hoxley Highways Superintendant Mr Churchwood. Promised to look at stones, report missing plates to police and try to arrange for replacements to be made. Also said that other plates had been stolen on A5 and A42 towards N. Pagnell. AHB 31 March '89. 88849 Victoria Coronation/Accession: 22 June 1837 14/15: Date of turnpike from - 1851/1852. In pencil See Road C in red box also further on A422 road. Reported loss to Andrew Pike, Sites + Mons Bucks Mus. - 10 Aprl 89. [ Handwritten notes consulted ] (B2).
According to Peter Gulland these milestones were on the Buckingham and Hanwell Turnpike Road 1744. p.121. 3 milestones suvive between Buckingham and Mixbury. Many mileposts were removed in Buckinghamshire during the WW2 for security reasons some were not returned or put in wrong place.These milestones follow London sequences from the Buckingham to Wendover Trust which joins this road. They have a rectangular cross section they ave bevelled edges with arabic numerals on front faces at angle to road. [ Peter Gulland The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshirre 1706 -1881.] (B3).
