In Peter Gullands extensive volume on The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring counties 2017 this is on The Wendover and Oak Lane Turnpike Road 1751 road 8 p.129. This road stretched from Aylesbury Road and Wharf Road in Wendover then southwards to junction of Oxford Road and South Lane Tatling End mostly A413 today. Milestones ran from London 19 south of Oak End at Chalfont St Peter to London 39 in South Street Wendover. Unusually consecutive stones were put alternate of road from start. These milestones were square had pyramidal top wih engraved letters on two faces installed fom two ends explains 2 in Amersham on same side road. In 1831 trustees spent money re engraving stones all 17 so stones today still have these later faces. During WW2 milemarkers throughout the County were moved or buried for security reasons sometimes bnot replacedor put back in wrong place. According to PG this a modern record of 116 out of a possible 230 from old sources. After trusts closed in 1880s and 1890s missing milemarkers on some roads were replaced with what the Milestones Society called Bucks Pressings by Parish or District or County.London 19 and and London 21 have 2 engraved faces with on back 1751 when installed eleven survive today.
