Description

18th to 19th C Milestone on A413 Buckingham to Aylesbury road at Weedon turn in parish of Wingrave and Rowsham. One of 14 milestones on this road recorded on 3 cards by V.F. Bignel [ Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society ] in January 1964. Grey brown stone some edges chamfered. Flat faces and white painted rounded tops. Inscriptions incised with black painted letters. On west side of road 32 inches high with bench mark and possible sheild depression Inscription: Left face: LONDON 43 AYLESBURY 3. Right face: LONDON 43 BUCKINGHAM 14 WEEDON. [ Sample drawings, description and location available ] (B1).
Recorded as present in 2003 on Milestone Society website on Aylesbury to Buckingham route National ID number BU_LC43. On west side of A413 'just north of New Road junction on wide grass verge'. 30cm wide, 28cm deep, 73cm high. Carved bench mark and rivet on top. Inscrption: left face: LONDON 43 BUCKINGHAM : centre face: LONDON 43 AYLESBURY 3 ( WEEDON ). [ Detailed description, photograph and location available ] (B2).
Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyor's drawings (1814) and 1" OSD map (1835) were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 28 sheet XXVIII page 3 of notes. Inscription: London 43 Buckingham 14. On Aylesbury to Weedon (C5) route. Also in same notes under Milestones-Types 'N Aylesbury to Buckingham - C5, C6'. Stone- 5- sided. Angled to road, lettered on 2 sides.' Note O.S. maps will show present positions- may not coincide with historical positions .In same notes under "MILESTONES ( In site 1986 except ? ) and in red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1." On OS 1" 1835, Bryant and Jefferies. 43: SW. of Weedon Turn L in blue. Underneath ( 1st eds 61.1 ). In same notes under " C in red box: Milestones". Sketch of stone with 43 at top 3 at bottom: 43 London 3 Aylesbury. In same notes uder C5 in box written in pencil NGR 806 178 Weedon turn ( W side ). All stone 5 sided letters on 2 sides only bench mark. Drawing consulted London 43 on both sides at top of face. Buck 14 on L face towards bottom. Ayl 3 on R face towards bottom. Bench mark on top. In same notes Milestones C in red box. In pencil [No mention of milestones in TMs up to 1808]. 1741 Geo.II c. 15 Cont. Act - MSs to be erected.TM. 1808 Mr. Herring to be paid when" [mile]stones properly and rightly spelt , are placed". TM. 1810 50 Geo.III - Rd. to be measured MSs and posts to be erected.G9.1. 1822 (July) Surveyor to give directions for Cast Iron Mile Posts on the road from Buckingham to Wendover and Guide Posts where necessary.TM. In red But see below. 1822 (Oct). 1. Surveyor to give directions for Mile Stones on "said road" to be fresh painted and letters fresh cut where necessary. 2. Guide posts to be all new painted and new posts where necessary.TM. 1823 John King to measure the T.P. road and prepare a map or plan for use of the Trustees.[See T3/51- P.R.O.].TM. 1828 Measure of road from Wendover to Buckingham 21m. 2f. 121yds.TM. 1829 'Proper hand posts' to be put up, Aylesbury and elsewhere with distances marked thereon-.TM. 1831 £8:8:0 to stonemason for "new facing and engraving milestones"(Treas.A/cs. - Wend.and Oakham). 1832 Asking Mr.King for variations in distance on Wendover/Buckingham road by shortening at Padbury Br. And at Swanbourne turning.W.andB.Trust/Dup.Wis. 1834 Jan.The Clerk to "write to the Clerk of the Oak Lane Trust stating that various improvements by shortening the road have been made and the Trustees, presuming that similar improvements have been made on the Oak Lane Trust, wish to be informed whether the milestones on the Oak Lane Trust have been placed accurately from the last mile-stone on the Oxford Road…".TM. 1834 July "….measure distance from 18th milestone on Oxford road….to ascertain where respective milestones (to Buckingham) ought to stand".TM. 1835 2 Mar. According to Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring counties 2017. This is on The Wendover and Buckingham Turnpike Road 1721 p..99. This road was 21miles long solely in Buckinghamshire nilestone were pyramidal shape with 2 faces ngaved facing road tthere are 15 left all 300 yards further north than theirorigial siting because trust further south altered distnce to London. Fter trusts close in 1880s or 1890s parsh or district or county replaced missing milmarkers with what the Milestone Society calls Buck Pressins standardmetal posts with two white faces and black writing . According to PG this is one0f 116 modern reoeds out a possible ".30 in Bucks rom records. During WW2 milemarkers troughout the county were over for security reasos n soetimesnot replcedat or put backin wrog place [Copy in HER].
