Description

Probable eighteenth or nineteenth milestone on A413 Buckingham to Aylesbury road at Hardwick. One of 14 recorded on this road by V.F.Bignell [ Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society ] in January 1964 on 3 record cards. Grey brown stone with some edges chamfered. Flat faces and white painted rounded tops. Incised black painted inscriptions. On west side of road 31 inches high opposite Poplars Farm. Shield shaped depression filled with cement on back. Not on current OS map but present on the first edition 25 inch OS with benchmark as BM300.1. Inscription: Left face: LONDON 44 AYLESBURY 4. Right face: LONDON 44 BUCKINGHAM 13. Confrimed by handwritten notes of microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) and 1" map (1835). Museum number 23 sheet XXXIII page 2 of notes. Inscription: London 44 Buckingham 13. On Hoggeston to Aylesbury (C6) route. Now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Also in same notes under Milestones-Types ' N Aylesbury to Buckingham- C5, C6. Stone-5 sided. Angled to road, lettered on 2 sides.' Note O.S. maps will show present positions- may not coincide with historical positions. In same notes under " MILESTONES ( In site 1986 except ? ) and in red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1." On OS 1" 1835, Bryant and Jefferies. 44: Hardwick turn L in blue In same notes in C5 in pencil. All stone 5 sided letters on 2 sides only NGR 804 193 Hardwick turn ( W. side ). Drawing shows London 44 on both sides at top. Buck 13 on L side towards bottom Ayl 4 on R side towards bottom. In same notes under Milestones with C in red box. In pencil [No milestones in TMs up to 1808] 1741 Geo.II c.. 15 Cont.Act - MSs to be erected.TM. 1808 Mr. Herring to be paid when" [mile]stones properly and rightly spelt, are placed".TM. 1810 50 Geo.III Rd. to be measured, MSs and posts to be erected.G9.1. 1822 (July) Surveyor to give directions for Cast Iron Mile Posts on the road from Buckingham to Wendover, and Guide Posts where necessary.TM. The Clerk to "write to the Clerk of the Oak Lane Trust stating that various improvemets by shortening the road have been made and thr Trustees, presuming that simioar improvements have been made on the Oak Lane Trust, wish to be informed whether the milestones on the Oak Lane Trust have been placed accurately from the last mile-stone on the Oxford Road….".TM. 1834 July " …measure distance from 18th milestone on Oxford road…to ascertain where respective milestones (to Buckingham) ought to stand".TM. 1835 2 Mar. Wendover to Buckingham 22m.Dup.Wis.1835 24 Mar. "…that the present milestones in this Trust be taken up, and new faced and lettered and painted, and direct they measure the turnpike road from the 18th milestone on the Uxbridge road from London".TM. 1848 1 June Lenghth of T.P. road 21m. 2fur. 110yds.Dup.Wis. 1858 MSs to be painted.GI.2. 1868 March Surveyor to report on state of milestones and "cost of putting them in good order".TM. 1868 October Tenders for repairing and re-writing milestones - Mr. Hodgkins; at 3/- a stone accepted.TM. 1871 Handposts to be painted and repaired " throughout".TM. According to Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring counties 2017. This milestone is on The Wendover and Bucking Road 1721 p. 99 road 5. Mostly A413 21 miles long akk in Bucknghamshire important route from London. Milestones stone blocks with 2 faces facing rod. All 21 in placeby Jefferys map of 1786. Now 300 vards north because alteration in disatce to London in trust further south. Never repaced en msse just replacements where necessary. Road stretched from Wendover junction with Wharf Road and Aylesbury road Wendover to just north of Bridge street Buckinham. 15 left 10 on west of road 5 on east all random. According to PG this one of 116 modern records out a possible 230 milemarkers in county from historical sources. After the trusts closed in 1880s or 1890s parishor county or itrct repaced missing milemarkers with what the Milestones Society calls Bucks Pressings standardised meta posts with 2 hite faces ad black writing. Duing WW2 up down country milmarkers were removed for security reasons sometimes not rtured ao put back n wrong place. [Copy in HER].
