Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century Milestone, one of 14 recorded on Buckingham to Aylesbury road by V F Bignell ( Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society ) in January 1964. Grey-brown stone, flat faces with some edges chamfered. Rounded tops painted white. Incised lettering painted black. 31 inches high on east side of road at Buckslow (now Buxlow) Farm. Inscription: Left face: LONDON 48 AYLESBURY 8 :Right face: BUCKINGHAM 9. [ Drawings, description and location card consulted available ] (B1).
Recorded as present in 2003 on Milestones Society website on Aylesbury to Buckingham route A413 National ID number BU_LC48. On east side of road. 'Was on grass verge between Buxlow and Neptune Farm base eroded'.28cm wide 28cm deep 71cm high. Inscription: left face: LONDON 48 AYLESBURY : centre face: BUCKINGHAM 9. Confirmed by handwritten notes on evidence from 1826 ? actually Bryants map (1825) and 1'' OS map (1835) were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 23 sheet XXIII page 2 of notes. Inscription: London 48 Buckingham 9. On Hoggeston to Aylesbury (C6) route. 'New line 1826'. In same notes under Milestones - Types " N. Aylesbury to Buckingham - C5, C6. Stone - 5 - sided. Angled to road, lettered on 2 sides." Note O.S. maps will show present positions - may not coincide with historical positions In same notes under " MILESTONES (In site 1986 except ?) also in red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1 and in blue N from London." In Petwer Gullands extensive study of the The The Toll Roads of Bucknghamshire1706-1881 with their conections into neighbouring counties 2017. This is on The Wendover and Buckingham Turnpike Road mostly A413 today road 5 p.99.From the junctionnow contnues through Buckingham to Buckingham ring rod.Mostly A413 north of Aylesburyfrom jution of Aylesbury Nd Wharf Road Wendover. During WW2 milemarker were removed throgh out ounty for security resons sometimes not returned or back in wrong place. Afier the trusts closdd in 1880s or 1890s parish or district or county replaced missing milemarkers with what the Milestone Society calls Buucks Pressings stansdad mtl posts with 2 white faces asnd black paint lettering. This one of 116 moder records about of a possible 230 from ancient sources. The trusts was 21 miles long and slely in Buckinghamshire milestones were initiated by the trust in1742 Jeferys map 1766 shows 21 in place from suare pyramidal stone with writing on 2 faces. The trust did not renew all their stones like other trusts but put replacement in where necessary so sme different stones along thisroute.2/3 rds n wsern verge5 on east randomly scatterd.They all moved 300 yards noth because of alteration in distance to London in trust to south.
