In Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshiire 1706 -1881 2017 these milestones are on The Wendover and Buckingham Turnpike Road 1721 road 5 p.99. This was part of a major historic route from London to West Midlands was 21 miles long all in Bucks from junction of Aylesbury Road with Wharf Road in Wendover to just north of London Road Bridge in Buckingham. Miilstones were iniatiated by the trust act of 1742 a 1766 map of Buckinghamshire shows all 21 milestones in place. From London 36 in Wendover to to london 56 now near Tescoe supermarket in Buckingham London Road there was London 57 near juncton of London road and Bourton road in Buckingham which was removed when the trust to the south moved the shortened the length to London. 15 existing milestones maybe moved during WW2 moved ehen not all on sae side of road.shortend when distance to london moved further south. Milestones were square in cross sction with incise cacapital lettering two lettrede faces faced trveller this trust kept its orinal milestones with just a few replacements. During WW" milemarkers were removed throughout the contry for security reasons and sometimes not put back or not put back inright place this may explain why 23rds of existing milsones ore on west oand other 5 random.placed. After the trusts closed in 1880s and 1890s highway authorities parish diastict or county rpeceed milemrkers on som oads with what the milestones Csociety cals Bucks Pressings a standardised metal post with two whit aes and black inscrptions. This one of 160 modern records of milemarkers out of apossle 230 from historical sources acording to PG. [Copy n HER] (B4).
