Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone on A413 in Padbury. One of 14 possible milestones (two missing between Bucklsow Farm and Whitchurch) on the Aylesbury to Buckingham road recorded by V. J. Bignell [ Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society ] in January 1964. Mostly grey brown stone, flat faces, chamfered with rounded tops. Inscriptions incised and painted black. This example in damaged with sheild shaped 5 inch depression. 38 inches high on west side of road. [ Drawings, description and location card consulted ] (B1).
Recorded as present in 2002 on Milestones Society website on Aylesbury to Buckingham route A413 National ID number BU_LC54.' On London Road south east of Padbury village'. ' Set in concrete lichen and moss on stone'. 31cm wide 25cm deep 75cm high. Inscription: left face: BUCKINGHAM 3 BANBURY 3: right face: LONDON 54 AYLESBURY14 WINSLOW 3. Confirmed by handwrtten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814 ) from Bucks County Museum number 13 sheet XII page 1 of notes now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Inscription: London 54. On Buckingham to Winslow (C6) route. Also in same notes under Milestones - Types " N Aylesbury to Buckingham - C5,C6. Stone - 5 - sided. Angled to road, lettered on 2 sides." Note O.S. maps will show present positions- may not coincide with historical positions. In same notes under " MILESTONES ( In site 1986 except ? ) and in red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1 and in blue overleaf N. from London." On Bryant and Jefferies and OS 1" 1835 : 54: SE of Padbury. L in pencil. In same notes under Milestones and C in red box.
