Description

Building recording carried out by AS&C in April 2009 to English Heritage level 3. 'Building 1' is a two-storey brick and stone building with clay tile roof and measures 8.33m X 7.83m and 3.24m high. There are central stable doors in the NE and SW sides and a window on either side of the each door on the ground floor. The upper floor is reached by a wooden vertical ladder internally and has an external hayloft door with winch above in a dormer on the northeast side. The ground floor is divided into three, a large stable or cattle shed with drains in the floor and traces of animal feeding troughs and a manger on two walls, and two smaller loose boxes or tack stores either side of the door in the NE wall. Estate records describe the building as a cattle shed and two loose boxes with a loft over in the 1960s, in 1982 it was being used as a store with granary above and in 1996 the ground floor had a grinding mill and the first floor was used as a grain store. See report for detailed description, photographs and plan (B1).
