Stones on alternate sides of road except at Amersham both on same side road possibly stones put up from opposite end. Square plan with pyramidal top inscription usually on one side only facing road they all had London on and Missenden on stones north of Great Missenden the parish they were in south of that village. During WW2 stones were removed for security reasons sometime not replaced or put in wrong place through out the country. In 1881 trustees spent £17 17s 0d. Reengraving the stones they were originally placed 1751. 11 survive today. After the toll road trusts closed the Highway Authorities parish or county or district replaced missing milemarkers in some places with what the Milestone Society calls Bucks Pressings standardised metal posts with two white faces and black paint inscriptions.
