Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century milestone on verge of A413 between Wendover and Little Missenden. Height 33 to 36 inches. Top 15 inches square with chamfer. Slight dimple in centre. 'May be misorientated by 45 deg'. Inscription on front only: LONDON 34 MISSENDEN 3. [Drawings, location and photographs] (B1).
Recorded on Milestones Society survey website (updated 2010) as present in 2003. National ID number BU_LC34 on Amersham to Aylesbury route. On east side of A413 on London Road at Little London. ' Leaning back and paint peeling'. 36cm wide 36cm deep 91cm high. Inscription: front: LONDON 34 MISSENDEN 3. [Detailed description, photograph and location] (B2).
Confirmed by handwritten notes on OSD surveyors drawings (1814) and OS 1" map (1835). Museum number 38 sheet XXXVIII page 4 of notes. On Wendover to Amersham (C4+ C3) route. Inscription: London 34 Wendover 1. Also in same notes under Milestones-Types ' 1/2 Mile from River Colne to Aylesbury - C2, C 3, C4. Stone. Flat face parallel to road. 4 sided. Except - Bedgrove ( London 39 ) - angled to road, lettered on 2 sides. Note O.S. maps will show present postions- may not coincide with historical positions. In same notes under "MILESTONES ( In site 1986 except ? ) also in red C1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1 ". On OS 1" 1835, Bryant and Jefferies. 34: ' Jet ' Garage. In same notes under Milestones C in red box. The Clerk to " write to the Clerk of Oak Lane Trust stating that various improvements by shortening the road have been made and the Trustees, presuming that similar imprvements have been made on the Oak Lane Trust, wish to be informed whether the milestones on the Oak Lane trust have been placed accurately from the last mile-stone on the Oxford Road…".TM. 1834 July " …. According to Peter Gullands extensive study The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 wih their cnnections into neighbouring counties 2017. This on The Wendover and Oak Lane Turnpike Road. From junction of Aylesbury Wendover to Oak Lane Tatling End.The original inscriptions were replaced mostly in 1881 During WW2 some milestones in Buckinghamshire were removed for security reasons and occasionally not replaced or put back in wrong place. Square in plan with pyramidal top inscriptions on one face only.This one of 116 modern records of milemarkers left in Bucks out of a possible 230 from historical sources. When the trusts closed in 1800s and 1890s the Highway Authorities parish or county or district replaced missing milemarkers or on some roads with what the Milestones Society calls Bucks Pressings metal posts with two white faces and black paint inscriptions.
