Description

The remains of a structure probably associated with the entrance through the U-profiled ditch were found at the northern end of the excavation. They consist of a pit near the rampart, which may have held a gate-post that burnt in situ and have been associated with a row of 7 postholes set within a foundation trench. These features probably formed just one side of a timber passageway extending from the rampart to the ditch. Since, however, only one side of this structure was revealed, and even that was heavily disturbed by recent activity, the form of the structure remains uncertain. The ditch of a hornwork was also found, running east from the end of the U-profiled ditch for 8m and then turning to the north for a short distance. There may have been a similar hornwork on the north side of the entrance and together they would have narrowed and elongated the approach to the entrance (B2).
