Description

Two concentrations of later prehistoric (Neolithic/Bronze Age) worked flint were recorded in topsoil and subsoil deposits in Field 4 (Test pit 109) and Field 5 (Test pit 515A). A mixed assemblage was recovered from Test pit 515A at relatively shallow depths (0.25-0.45m) within the topsoil and subsoil. These finds included a Mesolithic bladelet core, undated flint hammerstone and a Late Neolithic (3000-2400 BC) discoidal scraper. Three sherds of Middle Bronze Age (1500-1100 BC) pottery (possibly from a globular urn) and three sherds of Late Bronze Age pottery were also recovered.

Finds including an Early Bronze Age (2400-1500 BC) barbed and tanged arrowhead fragment and worked flint flakes were recovered from the subsoil of Test pit 109 in Field 4. A single sherd of Late Bronze Age (1100-700 BC) pottery was recovered from the topsoil of Test pit 6, Field 4.

A significant quantity of burnt flint was evident in the trenches and test pits in Fields 8, 11 and the northern extent of Field 9. The burnt flint was recorded from the topsoil and subsoil deposits within all these areas, as well as within excavated archaeological features. (B1)

Two prehistoric flint flakes were found in topsoil in an evaluation in Zone 6 of Area 4. Burnt flint was also found (B2).
