Description
The earliest features found within the site consisted of 10 features, certainly or very likely of Late Bronze Age date, recorded in fields 8 and 11, in the north-west of the site. The narrow ditches, pits/postholes, a hearth and a possible quarry pit were widely distributed on the brickearth, along the lower slopes of a discernable terrace, immediately to the west of the Rusholt Brook. Half of the features were located in trench 433 within a proposed access road at the northern edge of the site in field 11. Five features were identified, including a hearth, 0.5m in diameter and cut into the top of a natural tree-throw and four pits or postholes all up to 1m in diameter and between 0.4-0.2m in depth. Further to the south, isolated features were found in separate trenches. These features included ditches, 'quarry hollows' and a small pit. The ditches ran parallel to and approximately 10-14m west of the Rusholt Brook and may form the remains of possible Late Bronze Age field boundaries. Another ditch in Trench 448 running perpendicular to the Rusholt Brook is also probably a field boundary ditch, of possible Late Bronze Age date (containing fragments of fired clay). All the features in Fields 8 and 11 cut the natural brickearth geology and were sealed by brickearth-derived subsoil deposit. A significant quantity of burnt flint was evident in the trenches and test pits in fields 8, 11 and the northern extent of field 9. The burnt flint was recorded from the topsoil and subsoil deposits within all these areas, as well as within excavated archaeological features (B1).
Other later prehistoric artefacts were found in unstratified contexts, such as Mesolithic to Bronze Age worked flint, Middle Bronze Age pottery (possible a globular urn). Roman and medieval pottery was also found - see report for further details (B1).
