Description

Site visit by Subterranea Brittanica led by former RAF Wing Commander who had worked for Chiltern District Council, writing its war plans. The bunker was built in 1982 when the council offices had been constructed and comprised a series of rooms off a long corridor. Inside double swing doors are heavily reinforced gas and blast door weighing over a ton with three locks. Then a large dormitory room. Several rooms off the corridor, such as a kitchen. Both of these had escape tunnels to the street. Also chemical toilets still there and the former scientific advisors room, still with maps and charts on the wall. Also a communications centre. Bunker was designed to support the emergency team for 14 days. Now used as store and training for the fire brigade in search and rescue as, with the lights off, it is completely black, no light can get in from outside (B1).
Planning permission for building offices granted on 6th February 1985 (B3).
