Description

On the night of Saturday 7th August 1943 a Wellington Mark 3 bomber of 26 O T U crashed whilst returning to Little Horwood airfield during a night flying exercise. The aircraft crashed into houses on both sides of the High Street, killing 9 civilians and 4 of the 5 aircrew. The civilians were mostly local residents but included a family of Jewish evacuees from London who had moved to Winslow in 1940 having lost their home and business in the blitz (B1).
NGR to site of The Chandos Arms, demolished in the crash.
A plaque in St Lawrence's Church commemorates those who died in the crash.
