Description

HELD AT CONQUEST BY QUEEN EDITH. ASSESSED IN 1086 AT 20 HIDES & HELD BY ALRIC THE COOK. REVERTED TO CROWN. LATER PASSED TO DOYLEY, LE DESPENCER, DE HANDLO, EARLS OF ULSTER, GIFFARD, CHALONER & VERNEY (FULL MANORIAL HISTORY)(B2).

(Centred SP 706268) Earthworks, probably of manorial site (B7).
Manor Farm (SP 70582678) is on the site of the manor-house of the Chaloners, taken down in the 18th C. The earliest mention of the Manor of Steeple Claydon is in 1086 (B2).
The site of the original manor at Steeple Claydon cannot be identified, though it probably lay within the area of high ground now occupied by the Church and the present Manor Farm (built 1710 but not outstanding). See ground photograph. Surrounding this area is a low boundary ditch and a number of enclosures at present under pasture though probably associated with the original manor site (B8).
