Description

Evaluation, small area excavation and watching brief carried out by John Moore Heritage Services between September 2001 and March 2002 found evidence of continual occupation from the mid 15th century onwards, when the area formed a 'backyard' to property fronting Church Street. The area was subdivided in the 17th century and the farmyard separated from a small garden or orchard in the 18th century. Residual finds of early or middle Saxon pottery (1 sherd) and early medieval pottery (5 sherds) may indicate that the street frontage was occupied at earlier periods (B2).
