Description
The present house is the Abbot's Lodging, and contains the Abbot's Hall, the Parlour and Solar to its W and communication on the E side with the W range of the cloister (B12).
Grade I. C13, C15 and C16, remodelled C19/20. Two storeys, rubble stone with some ashlar work. Most windows C19, stone mullioned and transomed, with arched lights and hoodmoulds. Tiled roofs. Present house L-shaped formed from west range of cloisters and Abbots Lodging. Notley Abbey was founded circa 1162 by Walter Giffard, Earl of Buckingham for Augustinian Canons. Parts of grounds Scheduled Ancient Monuments (B20).
Historic building assessment carried out by Oxford Archaeology in 2004 confirmed the phasing of the standing buildings and showed the extent of C20 rebuilding and alterations. See report for details (B29).

Owned by Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh between 1945 and 1960 (B30).
