Summary

Possible site of earlier bridge over River Thames at Maidenhead - Bridge opened to traffic 1777. It was built from portland stone by John Townsend of Oxford under the supervision of Sir Robert Taylor. It replaced an earlier medieval wooden bridge.

Description

Possible earlier alignment of bridge, about 20m to north of present bridge, suggested by 1st edition OS map (B1).
However F S Thaker makes reference to a medieval/post-medieval timber bridge situated 5 -10m downstream of the modern bridge. The earliest historical reference to the bridge is 1297. It was replaced by a stone bridge in 1776. [Detailed history] (B2).
