Description

The survey notes that the wood contains two types of banks. The larger are higher and wide and mostly lack hedges and are believed to be medieval in origin as they often correspond with hollow ways. In the SW the medieval bank is set back from the road and in the NW disappears into the field to the N where it appears to have been destroyed to be replaced by the enclosure bank of 1855. The eastern boundary is quite complex and has relic stretches of the medieval boundary which support several large beech trees (up to 3.16m in diameter and over 145 years old). To the SE the original boundary bank can be seen on the SE side of New Road. The southern tip of the survey area incorporates a corner of Charcoal Grove. The New Road diverges southwards from the old hollow way enclosing a triangle which incorporates a complex of pre-enclosure hollow ways and banks, and late 19th century banks (1).
Site visit noted that the mediveal boundary bank appears to run inside the enclosure bank in the NE and is visible as an intermittant earthwork and ditch (3).
