Type and Period (2)

  • ROAD (18th Century - 1700 AD? to 1799 AD?)
  • BANK (EARTHWORK) (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD to 1798 AD)

Description

The English Heritage Survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes the earthwork remaisn of a track to New Inn Farm, in the form of a bank 60m long x 4m wide x 0.4m high, possibly dating from the early 18th century. The bank is also close to the route of the old Radclive to Akeley Road (1).

A probable post-medieval bank is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located about 70 metres SE of Corinthian Arch and centred at SP 68122 36270, two sections of earthwork bank up to 5 metres wide extend about 77 metres SW-NE. the 1814 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing suggests that this feature was part of a medieval or post-medieval road running from Stowe Castle (called ‘The Castle’ at that time), past New Inn and towards Manor Farm Buildings that was removed with the construction of the avenue that leads from Buckingham to the Corinthian Arch and part of it only now remains as a track from New Inn Farm (3-5).
