  • ORNAMENTAL CANAL (Constructed 1716, 18th Century - 1700 AD to 1799 AD)

Description

The English Heritage survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes that a parchmark on aerial photographs (NHC13142/26) centred at SP67403760 is thought to be the ornamental canal begun in 1716 and filled in between 1756 and 1763. The canal is shown on Bridgeman's plan of 1720 and Riguad's engraving of 1733-4. Two circular features are more difficult to interpret and maybe part of the School's grounds maintenance regime for the cricket pitch (B20).
